In the name of God Amen the eighteenthe daie of Februarye in the yeare of our Lord God one thousande fyve hundred eightie two and in the fyve and twentith yeare of the reigne of our soveraigne Lady Elizabeth by the grace of God queen of England France and Irelanddefender of the faith etc

I George Cockram of Collompton in the countie of Devon merchante being of good and perfect memorie (thankes be to Allmightie God) well wayeing and consideringe that death is incident to everye mortall may and yet the tyme and place thereof uncerten and unknownunto all men but to God only and that per adventure I should be called sodenlye or in suche tyme or place as that I should lacke tyme to utter my mynde and to make this my last Will and Testament doe therefore this present eighteenth daie of February the yeare above written make this my said last Will and Testament

First I give and bequeath my soule to Allmightie God my only maker and redeemer and my body to be buried in the parishe church of Upton Waiber otherwise called Collompton church

Item I will ye all and everye suche Will and Wills I have heretofore made or caused to be made whereunto I have subscribed my name and sett my seale or not subscribed my name and sett my seale whether it be by worde or wrytinge at annye tyme or tymes before the daie of the date of this my present last Will and Testament in all and everye clause and article persuant devise and devises legacies and bequestes therein conteyning and expressed as well of my lands and tenements as of my gooddes and chattells moveable and unmoveable shall be henceforth utterly mayde frustrated and voide and of none effect in the lawe to all intents considerations and purposes

Item I give and bequeathe to the relief of the poore people within the towne and parishe of Colompton twentie marks of lawfull English money to be disbursed amongst them within fyve yeares next after my decease at the discretion of my executor and overseers of this my saide last Will and Testament.

Item I give to the reparation of the parishe church of Upton Wayver otherwise called Collompton aforesaide twentie shillings.

Item wheras Thomas Mannynge my sonne in lawe oweth unto mee the summe of a hundred fourtie one poundes eighteene shillinges sixe pence of lawfull English money to be paid unto me after the rate of fouerteene poundes yearlie until the summe of a hundred fourtie one poundes eighteene shillinges sixe pence bee unto me my executors administrators or assignes well and trulye contented satisfied and paide and the first payment thereof to commence begynne and to be yerelie paide at a certeyne day limited by certeyne wrytinges thereof made

Item I give and bequeath unto Walter Mannynge sonne of the saide Thomas Mannynge the summe of one hundred pounds of lawfull money of England to be paid unto ye handes of the supervisors of this my sayde last Will and Testament by my executor in manner and forme followinge

To the use of the saide Walter Mannynge that is to saie I will that my executor of this my saide last will and testament shall yerelie pay into the handes of my saide supervisors the saide yerelie summe of fouerteene poundes or so muche other lawfull English money to the use of the saide Walter Mannynge when and at suche daies as my saide executor or assignes shall or maie receive the same untill the summe of one hundred poundes be fullye satisffied and paide

And my saide supervisors to ymploye at theire discretions to the use of the saide Walter Manninge untill he shall comme to and accomplishe the age of fouer and twentie yeares and then to be payde unto him his executors or assignes with the profitts which shall comme thereof

Item I give and bequeath unto Johan Manninge one of the daughters of the said Thomas Manninge one hundred pounds of lawfull money of England and I will that the overseers of this my saide last Will and Testament shall have the custodye and government of the saide one hundred pounds and to ymploye yt at theire discretion to the use of the saide Johan untill she shall come to and accomplishe the age of twentie and sixe years or be married which of them shall first and next happen to come or be

And also I hartelye desire my saide supervisors then to render an accounte unto the saide Johan and paie unto her or her assignes the said summe of one hundred pounds with all such profitt as shall be then increased by their good industrie in the usage and ymployment of the same

Item I give and bequeathe unto Richard Morgan my servant tenne pounds of lawfull English money

Item I give and bequeath unto my sister Margaret Farr fyve poundes of lawfull English money

Item I give and bequeath to everye of my children’s children twentie shillinges of lawfull English money

Item I give and bequeathe to everie of my godchildren twelve pence

Item I give and bequeathe to George Morgan my sister’s sonne twentie shillings

Item whereas there is oweinge unto me for the debt of Edward Bridgeman of Exeter deceased I will that yf my said executors can receive or retriethe the same or annye parte thereof that he paie John Jones of Bristell whoe married Elizabeth Bridgman daughter of the saide Edward Bridgman the one half thereof

Item I give and bequeathe to everie of my servantes in my house which shall be in my service at my decease that is to saye Agnes Kinge widow fourtie shillings and unto Henry Andrew Agath Thomas Alice Drewe and Alice [C..] and to everie of them sixe shillinges eight pence of lawfull English money

Item I give and bequeathe to Robert Cockram my sonne three hundred poundes of lawfull money of England one standinge cuppe of silver guilte sixe silver spoones which I last boughte my best gowne and my bedd in the [ ] wherein I nowe lye fullye performed

Item I give and bequeathe unto David Cochram my sonne the moytie or halfendeale of all my silver plate as well guilt [p..] guilt as [ ] and other cuppes [ ] with silver (before not given and bequeathed) to be equallye divided between the said David and ye executorof this my last Will and Testament by equal and even portions three hundred pounds of lawfull money two feather bedds in my newe chamber fullye performed and fynyshed with all thynges belonging to the same one garnishe of my best pewter vessels and my greatest brasse panne which I have in my house at Collombpon aforesaide

Item I give and bequeath unto the saide Robert Cockram my sonne one tenure that is to saie one tenement and one orchard or ground thereunto adjoyning with theire appurtenances situate lyinge and beinge in the towne of Collompton aforesaide in the saide countye of Devon and nowe in the houlding use or occupation of George Chappell or his assigns and fouer closes of land in one meadow with theire appurtenances there unto belonging conteyning by estimation ten acres be theye more or lesse situate lyinge and being in Collompton aforesaide and nowe in the houldinge use or occupation of the saide George Chappel or his assignes and the pension and pensions of the same for the terme of three thousand yeares yealdinge and payinge therefore yerelie unto my heirrs and assignes seaven shillinges of lawfull money of England and fouer feastes in the yeare most usuall by even portions and the fyrst payment thereof to be paide at the first quarter daie which shall first and nexte happen to be after the deathes of Alice Farie and Clement Farie

Item I give and bequeathe unto Philip Cockram my sonne and heire apparent all my parte portion and purpertie of and in the parishe churche of rectory and [ ..sonage] of Upton Waiver otherwise called Collompton in the saide countie of Devon with all his rights members and apurtenances to the said parte portion and purpertie belonginge or in anye wise apperteyning and all my parte portion and purpertie and such disposition and right of patronage of the perpetuall vicarage of the saide parishe churche of Upton Waiver otherwaies called Collompton aforesaide late parcell of the possessionns and [A…] of the late priory of Sainte Nicholas in Exeter in the countie of the cittie of Exeter nowe dissolved

And all my parte portion and purpertie of all the [T..] barnes, landes, tenements, glebe landes, rentes, reversions, [ ], common, wayes, pathes and wastes groundes, tythes of corne and graine, wolle, lambes and hay and all over tythes [ob..ions] fruites, profitts, commodities and heriditaments whatsoever with the appurtenances by what name or names soever theye be called or knowne to the saide [A..] and Church of Upton Weaber otherwise Collompton

And other the premises or any of them by anye manner or wayes or means belonginge or apperteyning or as member part or parcell of the said church and [A..] of Upton Weaber otherwise Collompton and of other the permittes or anye of them before this tyme beinge had, known, accepted used and reputed or taken as parte parcell or member of the same or with the same usuallye lette, occupyed or enjoyed and one messuage or tenement, houses, buildings, courtes, backsides, orchardes, gardens and other hereditaments with the appurtenances thereunto belonginge or in any wise apperteyning situate lyinge and beinge within the town of Collumpton aforesaide in the saide countie of Devon and now in the houldinge use or occupation of mee the saide George Cockram

And one other messuage or tenement, houses, buildinges, courts, backsides, orchardes gardens and other heredtitaments with the appurtenances hereunto belonginge or in any wise apperteyning situate lyinge and beinge within the towne of Collompton aforesaid late in the houlding use or occupation of Xpofer Mannynge deceased or his assignes and one other messuage or tenement with the appurtenances called or known by the name of Northcome otherwise situate lyinge and beinge in the parishe of Collompton aforesaid in the saide countie of Devon and nowe or late in the houlding use or occupation of Edward Baker or his assignes

And all the landes, meadows, feedings, pastures, commons, wastes, tythinges, rentes, reversions [ ] and hereditaments whatsoever with theire appurtenances to the said messuages or tenements belonginge or in any wise apperteyning situate lying and being within the towne and parishe of Collompton aforesaide in the saide countie of Devon

To have and to houlde unto the saide Phillipp Cockram and to the heires males of the bodye of the said Phillipp lawfulllye begotten forever

And for lacke of heires males of the bodye of the said Phillipp lawfully begotten to remayne to David Cockram my seconde sonne and to the heires males of his body lawfulllye begotten forever

And for lacke of heirs males of the bodye of the saide David lawfullye begotten to remayne to the saide Robert Cockram my thirde sonne and to the heires males of his bodye lawfullly begotten forever

And for lacke of heires of the bodye of the saide Robert lawfullly begotten to remayne unto the righte heires of me the saide George Cockram for ever

Item whereas Sir John Sentlegeur knighte by his indenture of lease bearinge date the nyne and twentith daye of May in the twelveth yeare of the raigne of our saide soveraigne Lady the Queen [m ] that nowe is, hathe demised granted and to [ ] unto Richard Prouse citizen and draper of the cittie and countie of Exeter all these landes tenements, meadows, pastures, feedinges, houses, buildinges, orchardes, gardens, woods and underwoods, moores, commons furze and heath with all and singular theire appurtenances whatsoever called Growen sett lyinge and being within the parishe or mannor of Collompton aforesaide or in either of them then, in the tenure maytenance use or occupation of Elizabeth Wood widowe or of her assigns or to the saide landes or tenements apperteyning or belonging or with the same before that tyme demised leased or [ ] and attested reputed or taken as greate parcell or number of the same or any part thereof with all and singular theire appurtenances to have and to hould unto the said Richard Prouse his executors and assigns unto the ende and terme and for and during the whole terme of three score yeares fullye to be complete expired and ended the said terme to commence and begyne within fouer dayes next and ymmediately ensuing the deathes surrenders forfeytures and other expiration or lawfull determination of the stated termes and interests of the saide Elizabeth Wood and Johan [Truslade] the wife of Thomas [Truslade] of and in the premises yeldinge and payinge therefore yerelye unto the saide Sir John Sentleger knight his heires and assignes twentie sixe shillinges eight pence and fouer pence for [couldadge] of lawfull money of England at fouer termes in the yeare most usuall as an in and by the said indenture amongst diverse other thinges therein conteyned more playnlie appeareth

And where Thomas Ryden of the Inner Temple in London esquire and Henry Skynner of Collompton aforesaide yeoman by theire Indenture of Lease bearinge date the first daie of August in the fyfteenthe yeare of the raigne of oure saide soveraigne Lady Queen Elizabeth hath demised granted and to [ ] unto the saide Richard Prouse all the foresaide messuage landes, tenements and hereditaments with theire appurtenances whatsoever by their severall proper names and several [ ] of the numbers of acres by estimation To have and to houlde unto the saide Richard Prouse his executors administrators and assignes for and duringe the whole terme of three thousand yeares next ensuing the begynnynge therof fullye to be complete and ended without impeachment of or punyshment of anye manner of [ ] spoyle or waste whatsoever the same terme to commence and begyne from and ymmediatelye after the deathe surrender forfeyture expiration or other lawfull determination of all and every forme estate or estates lease or leases heretofore lawfully had or made of the premises before such tyme as they said Thomas Risdon and Henrye Skynner anye thinge hadd of and in the same yeldinges and payinge therefore yearlie during the said terme of three thousandyeres to the saide Thomas Risdon and Henry Skynner their heires and assignes twentie fouer shillinges eight pence of lawfull English money at fouer termes of the year most usual as in and by the same Indenture of Lease amongst divers other thinges therein conteyned more plainly at large it dothe and maie appear whose estate interest and severall termes of years together with the said Indenture of Lease

I the saide George Cockram by good and lawfull conveyance and assurance in the [ ] I give and bequeathe unto the said David Cockram my sonne the foresaid messuage, landes, tenementes and hereditaments and all and singular other the permises with theire appurtenances before mentioned to be demised and granted unto the said Richard Prouse and my right, estate, title, claime, interest term of yeares and demande which I the said George Cockram nowe have or hereafter shall or maie have to of and in the premises and every parte thereof together with the said severall Indentures of Lease and all other wrytinges and conveyances concerning the premises yeldinge and payinge therefore yerelie unto the heires and assignes of me the saide George Cockram twentie fouer shillinges eight pence of lawfull English money at fouer termes in the yeare most usuall by even portions

Item I give and bequeathe the Audrye Hooker daughter of John Hooker of Exeter gentlemen tenn pounds of lawfull English money

And the resydue of all my goods and chattells as well movable as unmovable (not given and bequeathed) I give and bequeath unto the saide Phillipp Cockram my son whom I ordeyne and make my sole executor of this my saide last Will and Testament to use and bestowe at his discretion to God’s honour and glory

And I ordeyne and make and hartelye desire Humpfey Parris and John Ratcliffe my sonnes in lawe to be my supervisors of this my saide Will and Testament to whome I give full power and authoritie to see this my said last Will and Testament performed and fulfilled

And for their paines I give and bequeath to everie of them fortie shillinges of lawfull money of England with theire reasonable expenses to be susteyned about the execution of the same
