Decimo die Aprilis Regine Elizabethe duesimo octano 1586
In the name of God Amen witnesseth that I John Gyles of the parishe of Columpton in the countie of Devon doe make and ordaine this my last Will and Testament in manner and forme followinge
First I give and bequeath my soule to Almightie God my maker and redeemer and my bodie to xpian buriall in suche parishe or towne as it shall please God to call mee
Item I give and bequeathe my lease and terme to comme of my house and ground at Padbrook with the appurtenances to Joane my wieff during soe many years of my term therein as she shall happen to live if my time soe long endure
And after her decease I give the saide house and ground at Padbrook with the appurtenances and the said lease unto John Gyles my sonne his first wife and first sonne if he happen to have anye during soe many yeares as the saide John his first wife and first sonne or one of them yf the said have any shall happen to live yf my tyme soe longe endure
And yf the saide my tyme and lease be not ended and expired duringe the lives of the said John my sonne his first wife and first son if he have anye then I will and bequeathe the saide lease and all the residue of my tyme than to comme with the house and ground of Padbrook aforesaide with the appurtenances to Bridget my daughter
Item I give and bequeathe to Joane my wife all that my lease and lande mentioned in the same which containeth in it Mark lands and diverse parcells of other landes with the appurtenances duringe soe many yeares as she shall happen to live
And after her decease I give the same to John Giles my sonne his first wife and one of his children at the appointment of the said John if he happen to have any during soe many yeares as he the said John his first wife and one of his children by him soe appointed so longe shall happen to live
And after the death of the said John his first wife and childe aforementioned yf my terme and lease of the saide Mark grounds and the other parcells of ground in the same contained bee not expired and ended I give and bequeathe all the residue of my tyme and lease than to comme therein unto Katherine my daughter
Item I give and bequeath all that my land and ground with my whole tyme and lease which I have in John Warrens ground unto Joane my wief to use at her will and pleasure
Item I give to Catherine my daughter the brewehouse in Columpton towne which I have contained in my lease of John Warrens ground duringe soe many yeares as shee shall happen to live
And after her decease I give the same house and all my time then to come therein unto Bridgett my daughter
Item I give and bequeath to John my sonne to be delivered to him after the decease of Joane my wief and not before all my goods that is usuallie standing in and belonging to the hall of Padbrooke with one panne of brasse one crocke of brasse the best bed in the broade chamber performed and all my gownes and all that to them appertaining and all my waynes furniture and plough stuffe
Item I give to Katherine my daughter to bee delivered to her after the deathe of the saide Joane my wyffe and not before all the goodes usually standinge in and belonging to the little chamber the cubbard board in the broade chamber one panne of brasse and one brasse croake and six pewter disshes
Item I give to Bridgett my daughter to be delivered also after the death of my foresaid wief and not before all my goods usuallie standinge and beinge in the maulte chamber the table board in the broade chamber one brassen croake one brassen panne and six pewter dishes all which parcells of goods before mentioned my will and mynde is that they shall remaine in the use and occupation of Joane my wiffe dureing her life any gifte before in them preferred to the contrary notwithstanding
Item I give unto Joane my wief all my corne as well within the house as without all my swyne hogges all of my poultrie two of my best sign fyne and my blacke trottinge mare all my wood and haye and all my nappery and linnen and all my apparell timber and the residue of all my household stuffe which I have not appointed in this my Will
I give to the poore of the parish of Columpton to be distributed by myne overseers three shillings fouer pence
Item I give to Mary Mawditt to be delivered alsoe after the decease of my said wief and not before my second best bedde in the broade chamber one brassen croake one brassen panne and one heifer calf
Item all the residue of my goods and chattells not given or bequeathed I give and bequeathe to Mary Mawditt whome I make and ordayne to bee my whole executrix and she to use the same as God shall appointe
Item I do desire Mr John Thomas Mr Thomas Chapell and William Woodleighe to take the paines for me to bee mye overseers and see this my last Will observed and performed me John Giles
