Will of John Gyles late of Cullompton

In the name of God Amen witnesseth that I John Gyles of the parish of Collompton in the countie of Devon do make and ordayne this my last Will and Testament in manner and forme following

First I do give and bequeath my soule to Allmightie God my maker and redeemer and my body to xpian buryall in suche parish or towne as yt shallplease God to call me

Item I give and bequeath my lease and terme to come of my house and grounde at Padbrooke with the appurtenances to Johane my wife during so many yeares of my terme therein as she shall happen to lyve (yf my time so longe endure)

And after her decease I give the said house and grounde at Padbrooke with the appurtenances and the sayed leases unto John Gyles my sonne his first wife and first sonne yf he happen to have any during so many yeres as the sayed John his first wife and first sonne or one of them (yf the sayed John have any) shall happen to lyve yf my terme so long endure

And yf the sayed my terme and lease be not ended and expired during the lyves of the said John my sonne his first wife and first sonne (yf he have any) then I will and bequeath the said lease and all the residue of my terme than to come with the house and ground of Padbrooke aforesaid with the appurtenances to Brigett my daughter

Item I give and bequeathe to Johane my wife all that my leaseniece and lande mentioned in the same which conteyneth in ye Marks landes and divers parcells of other lands with the appurtenances during so many yeres as she should happen to live

And after her decease I give the same to John Gyles my sonne his first wife and one of his children at the appoyntment of the said John (yf he happen to have any) during so manye yeres as he the said John his first wife and one of his children at the appoyntment of the sayed John (yf he happen to have any) during so many yeres as the sayed John his first wife or one of his children by hym appoynted so longe shall happen to live

And after the death of the sayed John his first wife and child aforementioned (yf my terme and lease of the said Markes grounds and the other parcells of grounds in the same conteyned be not expired and ended. I give and bequeath all the residue of my tyme and lease then to come therein unto Katherine my daughter

Item I give and bequeath all that my land and ground with my whole lease and terme which I have in John Warrens ground unto Johane my wife to use at her will and pleasure

Item I give to Katherine my daughter the brewhouse in Cullompton towne which I have conteyned in my lease of John Warrens ground during so many yeres as she shall happen to live And after her decease I give the same house and all my tyme then to come therein and to Brigett my daughter

Item I give and bequeath to John my sonne to be delivered to hym after the decease of Johane my wife and not before all my goodes that is usually standing and belonging to the hall of Padbrook with one panne of brass one choke of brasse the best bed in the broade chamber performed and all my loomes and all that to them apperteyneth and all my waynes furniture and ploughe stuffe

Item I give to Katherine my daughter to be delivered to her after the death of the said Johane my wife and not before all the goods usuallie standing in and belonging to the little chamber the cupboard in the broad chamber and panne of brasse and one brasse croke and sixe pewter dishes

Item I give to Bridgett my daughter to be delivered also after the death of my foresayed wife and not before all my goods usually standing and beyng in the mantle chamber the table board the broad chamber one brass croke one brass panne and six pewter dishes All which parcells of goodes before mentioned my will and mynde ys that they shall remayne in the use and occupation of Johane my wife during her life (any gifte before in these presents to the contrary notwithstanding)

Item I give unto Johane my wife all my corne as dwell within the houses as without all my swyne hogges all my poultry two of my best fyne and my black trotting mare all my woods and hay and all my naperye and lynnen and all my apparell tymber and the residue of all my househould stuffe which I have not appoynted in this my Will

Item I give to the poore of the parishe of Collompton to be distributed by my overseers three shillings fouer pence

Item I give to Mary Mawditt to be delivered also after the decease of my sayed wife and not before my second best bed in the broad chamber one brasse croke one brass panne and one heifer calfe

Item all the residue of my goodes and cattells not given or bequeathed I give and bequeath to Mary Mawditt whome I make and ordayne to be my whole executrix and she to use the same as she shall appoynte

Item I do desyre Mr John Thomas Mr Thomas Chappell and William Woodleighe to take the paynes for me to be my overseers and see this my last Will observed and performed by me John Gyles witnesses of this present Will and Testament William Woodleighe Gabriell Edwardes
