Will of Thomas Pulman late of Cullompton, Gentleman

For as much as it is agreable with christian religion next unto the commandment of eternitie to take care of the well disposing of those temporall which our good God is pleased to bestowe upon so as to preforme care and amitie amongst those whome he hath committed to care know therefore that I Thomas Pulman of Colompton in the county of Devon gentleman doe make my last Will as followeth

And first I give unto the poore of Collumpton aforesaid fortie shillings

And whereas I have heretofore purchased from [ ] and William Skinner in the names of Tho Rolstone my father in lawe and of George Cockerell and William Alstone an estate for yeares determinable on the lives of myselfe Anne my wife and Thomas our sonne of and all that capital messuage or tenemt in Collumpton aforesaid wherein I now dwell called [ ] in trust to the use myselfe for my life and after to the use of my said wife for hir life for her joynture and in recompense of dowry and after her death to such uses as myselfe by my deeds or last Will should appointe

And whereas also I did purchase the reversion in fee thereof in my owne name and in the names of certain trustees named in the conveyance thereof nevertheless in trust and for the use of me and my heirs forever I doe now by Will and devise that after the death of me and my said wife the trustees above named and theire assignes shall stande and be possessed of and in the said premises in trust and to the use of my said sonne Thomas Pulman for and during soe much of the foresaid terme of yeares as shall be then to come and unexpired and that after my decease the persons trusted with the revertion and fee thereof and theire heires shall stand and be seized of the said capitall messuage tenement and premises to the use of my said sonne Tho. and his heirs forever to whome I doe hereby give and bequeath the same

I give and bequeath unto my sonne Samuel all those my tenements and lands with their appurtenances called Quants place lying in Colompton aforesaid and all other my landes in Collumpton which I lately purchased from Edward Quant and Gabriell and William Edwards or from anie of them And my will is that in whose name so ever I purchased the same or in what manner soever the conveyance thereof were taken or made that my whole estate and interest therein doe after my decease forthwith come unto my said sonne Samuel provided that if my said sonne Sam. his heirs or assigns shall not well and truly pay or cause to be paid unto my daughter Anne his sister the summe of one hundred and fiftie pounds when she shall accomplish the age of twenty one years and in the meantime the summe of tenn pounds for and toward her maintenance and education by quarterly paymts (to witt) upon the nine and twentith day of September the twenty fifth of December the twenty fifth of March and the fouer and twentith of June by equall portions

And if my said sonne Sam shall fayle of payment of the said one hundred and fiftie pounds portion of the said yearly summe of tenn pounds att the time and day of payment whereon the same ought to be paide as aforesaid that then it shall and may be lawfull to and for the said Anne or for my executrix hereafter named on her behalf from and after such faylere to enter into the said last mentioned tenement and premises and to take the profitts to the use of my said daughter until she be satisfyed and payde of the said portion and yearely rent

I give to my daughter Elizabeth and her heirs forever two closes of lands called Broome Hill lying in Colompton aforesaid provided that if my said sonne Thomas or in case of his death my said sonne Sam. shall pay unto my said daughter Eliz. at her age of twenty one years the summe of one hundred fiftie pounds then the said two closes to come unto such of my said sonnes and his heires forever respectively as shall soe have the said one hundred fiftie pounds and my said daughter is notwithstanding to have and receive the yearely proffitts of the said closes in the meantime for and towards her maintenance and education

I give unto my daughter Prudence all those my three closes of land called Crosselands in Colompton aforesaid and all my estate and terme of years therein provided that if my saide sonne Tho. doe pay unto her the summe of two hundred poundes att her age of twenty one yeares then my saide sonne to have the said three closes for and during all my estate and terme therein but my said daughter is to have the yearely proffitts of the said three closes in the meanetime for and towards her maintenance and education

I give to my said sonne Thos certaine landes in Collompton called Oxlands which I lately purchased of Anne Saffyn widdowe for a yearly number for a number of yeares yet in being and all my estate and interest therein

I give to my said daughter Anne and Elizabeth the summe of one hundred and fiftie pounds apiece and to my daughter Prudence the summe of one hundred pounds besides what I have formerly given them the same to be paide unto them by my executrix within two yeares after my decease and if one or more of my said daughters shall dye before she or they be of the full age of twenty one years then the portion or portions of her or them soe dying to come to the survivors or survivor of them

And if my said sonne Thomas shall dye before he be twenty years old without issue of his body my will is that all the estates herein unto him given shall come unto his said brother Sam. and that then my said sonne Sam. shall pay unto such of his said sisters att their severall ages of twenty one years the summe of fiftie poundes apiece and besides what is hereby formerly given or intended unto them

I give unto my cousin Mary Peck twenty poundes and to my niece Janet Shapston fifty poundes to be paide within a yeare after my death

All the rest of my testamentarie estate not herein given or bequeathed I give unto my said wife whome I make executrix of this my Will and I desire my loving friendes George Richards and ED and my brother Jo. Pulman to be Overseers of this my Will and to be ayding and assisting to my said wife and children by theire advice in what they may giveing unto each of them and a token of my love a ring of gold of twenty shillings value

This Will was proved att Westminster the fifth day of December in the yeare of our Lord God one thousand six hundred fiftie and fouer before the Judges for Probate of Wills and granting Administrations lawfully authorized by the oath of Anne Pulman the relict and sole executrix named in the above written Will to whom administration of all and singular the goods chattells and debts of the said deceased was committed she being first legally sworne (by virtue of a commission) truly and faythfully to administer the same
