In the name of God Amen the xjth daye of January in the yere of oure Lord God 1560 I Willm Turner of Colompton then beinge in good memory thankes be ouer Lord God make this my last Will and Testament in manner and forme followinge

First I bequeathe my soule unto Almighty God the maker of all thinges and unto Jesus Christ the redeemer of man my boddie to the hollye yerthe where hit shall please almightie God me to departe oute of this [pute ] lyve yf hit be within the parrish of Comolmpton then my will is to be buried by Jone my late wyef within the parrishe churche of ouer blessed Ladie in Colompton

And furthermost I will that Harrye Hancocke my servant shall have of my gyfte all such things as hereafter followeth first the tenement with the appurtenances which I have lately bought for hym of Mr Mark Slader for terme of his lyef after whose decease the remainder thereof to Alice Hancock my servant for terme of her lyef and after her decease the whole premises to remaine to John Turner my sonne for terme of his lyef according to the tenor of the same writinge more plainly appereth

Item I give unto the saide Harry my gowne furred with blacke conney my best doblet of worsted one blue cote of my wearinge one of my fyne half a dozen of silver spoones a featherbed with bedstede pillowe bolster and testor one brasse pott one panne one chafer of latten one coverlet one paire of sheets one goblet of sylver one paire of [ ] with a [ ] and splints one tableboard with a forme one cofer or chest my platters three pottingers and three saucers all these to be delivered to hym uppon my departinge of this lyef

Item I give unto Alice Hancock my servant his sister for her good service half a dozen of my best spoones of silver my standinge [ ] of silver and gilte with the cover to the same one white cupp of silver for ale with a cover in gilte one crocke of brass one of my great pannes of brasse my standinge bedd full performed as he standeth on the soller parlor one [ ] and a [ ] one cofer candlesticks of latten three platters three porringers and three saucers one chest and vi marks in monney

And where I have and holde within the mannor of Colompton iij severall tenements with the appurtenances granted to me Willm urner and to myne assignes by the late Abbott and Convente of Bucklande for terme of three score tenn yeres (yf I and certaine persons therein named so longe fortune lyve) the reversion whereof after the ende of the saide term with my consente is granted to John Wadham esquire by John Toker late Abbott of ye said monastery of Bucklande and Convente of the same to hym and his assignes duringe the full tyme of fouerscore yeres as appereth by ye severall writings beinge dated the xx daye of September in the xxvj yere of the raigne of ouer late soveraigne Lorde Kinge Henry the eighte which stated lease estates and grannte of reversion and also one of other tenemente lyinge within the saide mannor of Colompton named the [ ] whereof the saide John Wadham seased by the lease and grante of the saide Abbott and Convent for lyke terme of fouerscore yeres as appereth by theire writinge beringe date the xxj daye of September in the xxij yere of the raigne of ouer late saide soveraigne Lord Kinge Henry the eighte wherein I nowe dwell and holde by the saide lease by the gyfte and grannte of the saide John Wadham to me and to my assignes duringe the saide terme

And all other landes and tennements which I have within the saide mannor I have and holde hit by my former leases and bond speciffied where uppon all and every eche the hole estates leases and grannte made to me for the same I the saide Willm Turner by the grace of God doe make and declare uppon the same this my present last Will and Testament in manner and forme followinge that is to saye

Whereas I have and holde one tenement with the appurtenances wherein I now dwell duringe the terme before mentioned I give and bequeath to John Turner and Jane Turner my servants with divers other landes and tenements which I have and holde within in the said mannor of Colompton as hereafter shall appere (except and alwaies reserved one tenemente with a garden adjoyninge thereunto that is to witt the West tennemente late now bylded by me and iij closes of lande lyeinge in the west syde of the waye towards Saint George’s Well and one other tennemente with a garden and certaine parcells of lande to the same pertaining named [Harlewynys] tennemente now in the holdinge and occupienge of Harry Pary to have and to holde all and every suche my saide landes and tennement with the appurtenances except before excepted to the saide John and Jane and theire assignes duringe my said termes and estates yeldinge and payinge yerely unto the Lord of the manor of Colompton all rents sute and service to them due for the same

And also I give and bequeathe unto the said John and Jane all those pcells of landes and tennements as hereafter followeth that is to witt a close with ye littell meddowes named Wormeswill and one close named Longlande whiche hath byn pertaininge to the tennemente that I dwell in

And moreon I give to the said John and Jane ij other close of lande named the Clampytte that is to wytt one close named the Woodbyne close lyeinge on the Southsyde of the Greate Clampitte and the other lying next be northe the close of John More and next adjoyning to John Foxes close at Clampitte and one other close lyeinge by south the waye ledinge towards Ponsford which I holde in my owne hands and one other close there lyeng towards Ponsford that Edwarde Baker ther hodethe at will of me and one close lyenge at Highhaller that John Cloke holdeth of me at will and ij hames lyenge under Monkeswood that John Parker there holdeth duringe my lyef as appereth by my byll to hym made

And one tennement with a garden now in the holdinge of John Parwle with one close of lande at pyteance and iij other closes of lande lyenge at [Skobyndon] which Harry Tyllerd and Roger Bedie there now holdeth of me lyenge in the north syde of the waye leading towards Tynton and one littell meddow lyenge by the vicarage ground that John Littlejohn holdeth of me and one parcell of grounde lyenge beyondet Stoniforde Bridge which John [Moly] there now holdeth of me and one close of ground named Shortelands which John Cole merchante holdeth of me at will and also twoe other closes of land at [Stobyndon] which Lawrence Tyllerd holdeth of me at will

To have and to holde the premises with their appurtenances to the saide John and Jane and to theire executors and assignes duringe myne estate and terme payenge all rents sutes and service comprised in the leases thereof

Item I give unto my servant Alice Hancocke my tenement with the curtelage and garden with one close of lande named Dodpole which Harry Parys holdeth of me at will

Item to her I give my close and meddowe named the [methes] which Lawrence Tyllerd holdeth and one littell meddowe lyenge by Culme Bridge that John Chave holdeth and one close of lande lyenge next to [ ] that the same John Chave lykewise holdeth and also three closes of lande lyenge be south the waye ledinge to Ponsforde Mill which George Cockeram and John Sampson holdeth of me at will

To have and to holde all the saide tenements curtelage and garden with all the premises and theire appurtenances to the saide Alice Hancock and her assignes duringe her naturall lyef (yf my estate and terme endure so longe) doinge and paienge all rent sutes and service to the Lorde thereof yerely contain in the lease thereof

And yf hit fortune the saide Alice to die levinge Harry Hancock her brother then I will let all the premises holy to remaine unto the saide Harry duringe his lyef (yf my estate endure so longe) paienge to the Lorde of the mannor all such rents sutes and service as is comprised uppon ye lease thereof and also to myn executor John Turner yf he be then lyvinge yerely xs lawfull money of England quarterly to be paid

And furthermore yf hit fortune the said Harry Hancocke die before the end of my saide term then I will all the premises with the appurtenances wholy shall remaine to my executor and his assignes duringe myne estate and term

Item I give and bequeath unto my coson [Emote] late my servant and now the wief of Thomas Bennet the [ ] tenement or house with the garden which I have lately bylded which Thomas Mogridge sometime dwelled in and iij closes of grounde lyenge by North Perywood which John Crosse and John Broke there now holdeth of me at will

To have and to holde all the saide tenement and garden and iij closes of grounde with the appurtenances to the said [Emote] during the saide term of her lyef yf myne estate and terme so longe endure conditionally that she doe keep hit in her owne handes and doe well and sufficiently repaire hit and doe dwell uppon the same paienge yerely to myne executors and their assignes to rent for the same xxxijs iijd quarterly to be paied by even portions

And also I will my executors shall suffer my olde servant Elizabeth Grene widdow peaseably to have hold and kepe the tennemente and garden which she dwelleth in for the yerely rent of xvs duringe her lief yf myne estate so longe continue

And yf she fortune to die or departe within my said terme [ ] Johan Danyell my servant then I will that all the said tennemente and garden wholy shall remaine to the said Johan to have and to hold all the said tennement and garden to the said Johan Danyell and her assignes during the terme of her lyef yf myne estate and terme so longe endure bearing rent yerely for the same to my executors xvs and to repair the same

And yf she fortune to die before the ende of my said terme then I will that all the said tennemente and garden wholy shall remain to my executors and to theire assigns and to the executors and assigns of any one of them duringe my said estate and terme

And further I will after my decease my saide executors shall ymmediatly receive and take upp all debts and duties due unto all persons to whom I shall be debtter unto and thereof to make paimente to all them that I am debter and offer unto and uppon paimente thereof to make a small acquittance for me

And according to my promise thereto deliver to my master John Wadham my bedsteade and to my good mistress his wyef my gilte cupp and [ ] desiringe them of theire aide and helpe if yt be [wronged ] by any man for my righte

And fynally I will that myne executors and theire assignes shall yerely distribute amongst poore people in the parishe of Colompton uppon the daye of my buriall in redy monney ijs to praye for me and my father and mother and my ij wyves Thomazin and Jone and all Christian soules

The rest of all my goods and chattalhs not given nor bequeathed except suche things as I shall give to others I give and bequeath unto John Turner and Jane his wief my sonne and daughter whome I constitute and make myne executors and to dispose hit for the welthe of my soule to the pleaure of God

To this witnesseth William Woodrow vicar of Colompton Symon Kaylewaye John Hake [ ] Cockstone Lawrence Tillerde and others persons under my seale the daye and yere above written
